“So I talked to the lawyer yesterday after I left here, and got all the paperwork in place.” Cam opened the envelope and handed the papers inside to Kelly. “I just need you to sign this authorization form so I can go to the bank and talk to them about the accounts.”

Kelly shifted to a sitting position, took her glasses from the table beside the bed, and slipped them on. She frowned at the paper. “I’m not one hundred percent comfortable with all of it, but I don’t have the energy to deal with it.”

“Speaking of, where’s the original letter the bank sent you?”

“I put it on the desk upstairs in the office.”

Other than his stepmother’s bedroom, the one room he and Dodie hadn’t gone through yet. Unless she took care of it herself.

“Okay. I’ll check it over once you’ve signed these.” He pulled a pen out of his pocket and cast around for something to put the paper on. He found a large, coffee-table book of cathedrals in Italy that was lying on the couch and brought it over.

She held the book a moment, looking wistful, her finger tracing the picture on the front. “I bought this book to inspire your father,” she said. “I was hoping we could make a trip there some day.”

“Dad wasn’t much for travelling,” Cam returned.

“I know. I had so many dreams and hopes for our time together. So many plans for things we could do.” She sucked in a quick breath and Cam caught the glitter of a tear in the corner of her eye. He felt a glimmer of sympathy for her. Life hadn’t turned out the way she had planned, he thought. Divorced and then widowed. Then losing her only child.

“I’m sad for what you lost,” he said, covering her hand with his.

She nodded, but then pulled her hand away. Though he wasn’t surprised, her reaction to him, her attitude around him, could still sting. And once again he wondered what caused her antagonism. But he wasn’t delving into that now.

So he handed Kelly the pen, and she signed the papers with her immaculate script.

“You’ve always had such beautiful handwriting,” he said as he took the pen she handed him, then the papers.

She blinked at that, looking surprised. “You think so?”

“Oh, yeah. I remember watching you write letters, the old-fashioned way with a pen, admiring the curves and evenness of your writing.”

“You would watch me?” Again, that surprise that created an element of puzzlement in him.

“Yeah. Of course. I watched when you baked, when you cooked. You were always such an excellent cook. I know I shouldn’t say this, but so much better than my mother was.” He gave her a gentle smile as he spoke, hoping, somehow, to bridge this gap between them. A gap that existed from the first fight they had.

That particular skirmish was over him asking Greg to help with the chores. Cam didn’t think it was fair that he always had to get up early, not just to gather the eggs but to wash them as well.
